Diving conditions in the South Andaman Sea
The South Andaman Sea is renowned for its diverse and vibrant coral reefs, with prime diving sites like Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, and Koh Haa Lagoon. Unlike the North and Central Andaman Sea, which feature expansive terrain, stunning rocks, hard corals, and glassfish, the South offers unique landscapes including caves, walls, and pinnacles. The dense coral reefs and large schools of yellow snappers create an entirely distinct underwater experience. The vast coral ecosystems here are unparalleled, offering one of the most extraordinary marine landscapes in the world.
Climate and diving season
The climate in the South Andaman Sea experiences seasonal changes, with the transition occurring in May and November. In May, the dry season ends, and the rainy season begins, marked by the change in monsoon wind direction from northeast to southwest, bringing strong daily winds. In November, rainfall persists, but temperatures drop, and the monsoon ceases, with the northeast wind calming the seas. From November to May, the weather is generally dry with calm waves, making it the peak season, especially from December to March. Conversely, from June to October, the region experiences daily rainfall and frequent typhoons brought by the westerly monsoon winds, making it a dangerous period for travel.
How to dive
Diving in the South Andaman Sea is typically done either on a liveaboard from Phuket or as a day trip from resorts on Ko Lanta, Phi Phi Islands, or the Krabi region. These locations serve as convenient starting points for accessing the vibrant dive sites of the South Andaman Sea.
